Five Top Scuba Diving Destinations 2

Newport, Rhode Island:

Scuba diving enthusiasts from the east coast flock to this coastal city. Complete with scuba diving training, you can find the Dumplings, a dive site that features lobster, crabs, and rocks covered with anemone. It should be noted that this area is intended for experienced divers only. Moreover, the ever popular wreck dives can be arranged through the many dive charters offered here.

The cooler waters of the Atlantic make this a much colder destination that our previous suggestions. -

Florida:

Ranked among the top ten scuba diving destinations worldwide, as well as the best in North America, you can dive along the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Coast. Her you will find a variety of species, including dolphins, sharks, giant turtles, sting rays, manatees, and more. The difference between the two coasts is that the Gulf Coast has better visibility, whereas the Atlantic Coast has more wrecks and reefs. You may also want to check out the Florida Keys for their exquisite tropical fish and delightfully warm water. There is also a lot to do there in terms of other forms of tourism, plus a lively social scene.

The warm waters of the Gulf and Caribbean make this a year-round scuba destination that offers something for everyone, no matter what their level of expertise.

Five Top Scuba Diving Destinations 1

Although there are many destinations around the world that have been touted as the best scuba diving areas, there are also several scuba diving sites here in the US that rank right up there with the world’s best.

Here are five of the top scuba diving sites which enthusiasts will love and want to visit at least once in their lives:

Hawaii:

The big island boasts one of the best scuba diving adventures in the US. Scuba sites can be found in Kona and Kohala, with depths ranging from 10 feet to 130 feet.

Cavern Point, Place of Refuge, Kailua Pine Trees, and Red Hill are also well-known scuba sites. The warm waters of the Pacific make this a year-round scuba destination that offers something for everyone, no matter what their level of expertise. The only disadvantage is the cost of travel to the islands, and the time, but with great all inclusive package holidays these days, Hawaii is a lot more affordable these days.

Monterey, California:

Known as the best beach in the US, Monterey is one of the premier areas for scuba divers. With over 5000 square miles of water and with visibility of up to 60 feet, this is one of the most popular scuba diving destinations. The specific areas to go to in Monterey include McAbee Beach and San Carlos Beach, Stillwater Cove and Monastery Beach in Carmel, and Whaler’s Cover and Bluefish at Point Lobos (you have access to an underwater trail at these sites).

The generally warm waters of the Pacific make this a year-round scuba destination that offers something for everyone, no matter what their level of expertise. This will be somewhat cooler than our next suggested destination, however.

Catalina Island, California:

Known for its reefs, shark schools, and kelp forests, Catalina Island offers a good visibility from 40 feet to 100 feet. Two Harbors, located on the north-west side of the island, is a great scuba site due to its wrecks and vast caves. Casino Point Marin Park is rich in marine life, reefs, and wrecks. The warm waters of the Pacific make this a year-round scuba destination that offers something for everyone, no matter what their level of expertise. Catalina Island is also an adorable little jewel in the Pacific, with lots to see and do.

Suwanee River Wilderness Trail in Florida 1

Suwanee River Wilderness Trail in Florida 1

If you want to get away from it all and enjoy quality time in the midst of Mother Nature, a great option for you is to pay a visit to the Suwanee River in Florida to enjoy kayaking and canoeing.

The Suwanee River Wilderness Trail is in Northern Florida, near the town of Live Oak. The closest airport would be Jacksonville, Florida.

You don’t need to do a lot of planning in advance for your trip since there will not be many weather-related issues there. In fact, when part of the country is shivering from the cold, you can enjoy a pleasurable stay near the Suwanee River. Just remember to dress in layers, and bring clothes that will dry easily if they get wet, plus your swimming gear and towels, of course!

The best time to visit this river is during early spring and late fall when the water levels are just right for kayaking and canoeing. Moreover, there are hardly any insects. As well as this, the atmosphere is perfect for paddling during these seasons. However, it is recommended that you avoid the extremes of summer because of the heat, humidity, and bugs!

The stretch of the Suwanee River between Suwanee River State Park and White Springs is the most beautiful part of the trip. Best of all, there is no need for you to carry along a canoe with you. There are several organizations that will not only arrange a canoe for you, but will drop you off at your designated location, and pick you up at the pre-designated time.

You can also leave your vehicle with them to save worrying about it while navigating and exploring the pristine beauty of this river. These organizations will also provide you with necessary camping equipment, so all you will have to bring is your clothes and food.

If you navigate your way around the river silently, you might come across some foxes, raccoons, and deer. You might also see an occasional alligator. Always be respectful of any wildlife you come across-remember this is a national park, and their home.

Orlando: A Great Family Spring Break Spot 2

Don’t forget that Sea World is also here in Orlando, not just Disney World, and is also well worth seeing. Check to see if there are any special package deals that combine all the attractions during the time you’re planning to visit.

While the aforementioned land package is only $199.00, which is quite inexpensive, begin searching the Internet for air/hotel packages to see if there are cheaper deals.  If you stay within a 5-mile radius of the park, there is usually a complimentary shuttle service available.

Book early!  With the current recession, most travelers will be choosing destinations that are closer to home.  Yes, people who live in Florida DO go to visit these places, especially on school trips, so plan ahead.

Look at the different packages you find on line, and compare them carefully. If the package you choose offers a car rental, you may consider staying at a hotel that is more than five miles from the park.  This will save money in the long run, especially now that the price of gas has done down.

TIP:  If you are pressed for time, and depending on the weather, visit Walt Disney World in the morning hours and Sea World in the afternoon.

Stop by Epcot for dinner and visit the fabulous sites there during the evening hours.  Check with the parks for the special show times as well, for example, the Shamu killer whale show, and animal feeding times.

Make the most of your trip to Orlando by planning ahead. You’ll be glad you did!

Spring Break in South Florida: Key West, Miami, Daytona & South Beach

Florida is a perennial vacation spot for many, but for college students it is one of the best places to go on Spring Break.

Key West has white-sand beaches and turquoise water.  It is considered a tropical paradise for visitors, still relatively unspoilt despite its popularity ever since the days of Ernest Hemingway.

Water sports are highly popular here such as diving, snorkeling, and exploring the underwater coral reefs.

Miami Beach has become more and more famous as the years have passed.  It is a place where colorful buildings line the streets and shopping is superb, encompassing the most well-known designer shops in Florida.

With a variety of restaurants, you will be spoilt for choice in Miami.  The beaches are great and of course the weather couldn’t be better this time of year.

South Beach has become synonymous with the best things in life, and a certain style that can’t be beat. The beach at South Beach has become just as popular as Miami Beach.  Although the hotels on Collins Avenue are expensive, you can find affordable accommodations on Collins between 10th and 15th St.

Daytona is well known for its Daytona 500 races as well as Bike Week, and hordes of college students descend here during Spring Break.

While most college students will spend their entire stay on the beach, Daytona does offer the opportunity to visit the Kennedy Space Center, a fascinating trip and a good back up destination if the weather turns a bit unpredictable.

The best thing about vacationing in Florida is that it is quite affordable, and the airfares tend to be lower than other vacation spots, especially if you keep an eye out for the best deals. However, you need to book early, as many students from across the country will fly to Ft. Lauderdale and other major cities in Florida.

Only two and a half hours from New York, time is of the essence when getting ready for a Spring Break vacation.  So pack light, preferably with only carry-on luggage. Try to get an early flight, wear your swim suit or trunks under your clothes, and upon arrival, get ready to hit the beach!
